Sensei Harman

Sensei Greg Harman is a 5th dan (degree black belt)
in Yamashita-ha Shorin-Ryu Karate.

He and his wife started training in 1992 in Motobu-ha Shito-Ryu with

Sensei Kevin Gurganus.  They were charter members of his dojo, Carolina Martial Arts in Durham, NC.

In 1994, they moved to the Twin Cities. They started training with Sensei John Dombeck in Yamashita-ha Shorin-Ryu.  Between 1994-2006, Greg studied with Sensei Dombeck as well as his teacher, Sensei Daniel Schroeder, and attended twice-annual seminars with the head of their system, Soke Tadashi Yamashita.

In 2006, Greg's family relocated to the Chicago area.   Greg and his wife became direct students of Sensei Schroeder for the following 19 years.

When Greg and his wife moved again, to Walla Walla, WA, in 2017, they continued to train together under the distance-mentorship of Sensei Schroeder. Now a 5th dan, Greg has developed his understanding of his karate as karadashedo.

As a student in Yamashita-ha karate, Greg has also been a student of Matayoshi Kobudo (traditional Okinawan weapons art) for more than a decade.

Over his thirty years of training, he has also spent two years total studying aikido.
Though he has only qyu ranking in that art, he admires its profound spirit, approach, & techniques and has built them into his karadashedo practice of karate.

Sensei Harman is also a qualified, professional educator.  He has two Masters' Degrees and a Doctorate in Education, was a K-12 teacher for a dozen years and has been a college professor in teacher education for over twenty years.
